Wales come back to earn point against Switzerland

Wales rallied to rescue a point in their opening match of Euro 2020 against Switzerland after a 1-1 draw.

Kieffer Moore headed in with 16 minutes remaining after Breel Embolo’s opener looked to have given Switzerland the win.

Switzerland thought they had grabbed all three points late on when Mario Gravanovic came off the bench to score a second, but the striker was narrowly offside as Wales held on.

Moore could have given Wales an early lead but when his header was superbly diverted over by Yann Sommer.

Switzerland dominated the match from that point on though, and Wales goalkeeper Danny Ward was called into action a number of times to keep the Swiss attack at bay.

Fabian Schar could have opened the scoring but his shot was stopped by Ward before Haris Seferovic shot narrowly wide.

The best chance of the half fell to Seferovic, but the Benfica striker scooped the ball over the bar after Embolo’s pass put him in a terrific position to score.

Embolo was in the thick of the action after the restart too and saw his shot saved by Ward when he was through one-on-one.

He found the breakthrough moments later though when he rose highest to head in a Xherdan Shaqiri corner.

Wales were perhaps lucky to only be a goal down at this stage, and their luck paid off 16 minutes from time. From a short corner, Joseff Morrell floated the ball into the area and Moore’s superb header found the bottom left corner.

Embolo headed over and Denis Zakaria’s shot was blocked as Switzerland pushed for a winning goal.

Gavranovic thought he had found just that moments after coming off the Switzerland bench when he fired in from six yards, but a quick check with VAR showed he was narrowly offside.

Embolo and Gavranovic both had further chances to win it for Switzerland but Ward held firm to hold onto the draw.

Wales continue their Euro 2020 campaign when they meet Turkey in Baku on Thursday, with Switzerland playing Italy in Rome on the same day.
