Caleb Ewan edged a bunch sprint finish to win his first ever Tour de France stage.

The Lotto-Soudal rider launched a late attack and passed Dylan Groenewegen in the last few metres, with Elia Viviani finishing third.

Julian Alaphilippe retains the yellow jersey and reigning champion Geraint Thomas stays in second after finishing in the main peloton.

“I can’t believe it,” Ewan told ITV4. “I have been close in the last four sprints I have done.

“My team never lost faith in me and I never lost faith in myself.

“There is no other race I’ve dreamt of winning since I was a young kid,” said Ewan.

“It seemed so distant watching in Australia – I can’t believe I’m even here but to win a stage is a dream come true.”

The Tour enters the Pyrenees for the first time tomorrow with a 209km mountain route between Toulouse and Bagneres-de-Bigorre.
