Tottenham slip up against struggling Southampton

Tottenham have missed the chance to move into the top four of the Premier League after a 1-1 draw against 18th-placed Southampton.

Southampton opened the scoring after Ryan Bertrand’s cross was turned into his own net by Davinson Sanchez, before Harry Kane equalised three minutes later.

Tottenham should have levelled through a number of chances in the second half but were only able to turn two shots on target throughout the match.

After a quiet start, Southampton took the lead in the 15th minute. Bertrand’s cross from the left by-line went only as far as Sanchez, who sliced the ball past his own goalkeeper.

Eric Dier nearly levelled immediately though, smashing the ball against the right post from inside the penalty area.

Harry Kane scored his 21st league goal of the season to level two minutes later, heading in from Ben Davies’ corner.

On the half-hour mark, Moussa Sissoko sent the ball narrowly wide before Kane was crowded out in the area.

Kane had a chance to double his tally in the second half, rising highest but his header was deflected over the crossbar.

Eric Lamela then saw his shot blocked, before Sofiane Boufal nearly snatched a winner for Southampton.

Kane came within inches of scoring in stoppage time after picking up Dele Alli’s pass, but sent his shot narrowly wide of the right post.
