Ireland’s Shane Lowry is tied for the lead with American JB Holmes after the second round at the Open but Rory McIlroy and Tiger Woods have missed the cut.

McIlroy posted a joint-best score for the day of six-under but missed the cut by one stroke after carding eight-over in the first round.

Woods improved to card a one-under second round but missed the cut for the third time in 21 Open appearances after scoring seven-over yesterday.

Lowry was one shot off the lead overnight but joined Holmes at the top of the leaderboard by repeating his four-under 67, with English pair Lee Westwood and Tommy Fleetwood one shot back.

“Part of me is very disappointed not to be here for the weekend. I’m emotional but happy with how I played,” McIlroy told BBC Sport.

“The support I got out there was incredible and you could see on the back nine, I went with it today and that’s what I was planning to do all week.

“Yesterday gave me a mountain to climb but I dug in and showed good resilience. It’s going to hurt for a bit. I’ve been looking forward to this week for a long time.

“I didn’t play my part but everyone in Northern Ireland came out to watch me and played theirs.”

McIlroy has finished in the top five in his last four Open appearances, winning the tournament in 2014.
