Ireland’s Shane Lowry has taken a four-shot lead after the third round of the Open.

An eight-under 63 took Lowry to 16-under for the tournament with England’s Tommy Fleetwood four shots back.

JB Holmes, who shared the lead after round two, posted a two-under 69 to drop to third on 10-under. Justin Rose is tied for fourth with Brooks Koepka on nine-under.

Lowry hit eight birdies and 17 greens in regulation on the way to his 63.

Cheered on by the home crowd, Lowry hit five birdies in the back nine and three straight birdies between the 15th and 17th.

Holmes started the day with two birdies in the opening three holes but two successive bogeys on 13 and 14 saw him drop back to third.
