Rory McIlroy’s hopes of making the cut at his home Open have been effectively destroyed after an eight-over 79 left the Northern Irishman 13 strokes off the lead.

McIlroy quadruple-bogeyed the first after sending his tee shot out of bounds and a double and triple bogey on the 16th and 18th moved him from tournament favourite to an outsider for making the cut.

American JB Holmes is the overnight leader with a five-under 66 with Ireland’s Shane Lowry one shot back.

English trio Tommy Fleetwood, Tyrell Hatton and Lee Westwood are part of a 13-man group on three-under, along with Scottish debutant Robert MacIntyre and John Deere Classic champion Dylan Frittelli.

Former champions Tiger Woods and Phil Mickelson also struggled, with Woods finishing seven-over and Mickelson on five-over.
