Switzerland await Euro 2020 fate after beating Turkey

Switzerland have given themselves a great chance of qualifying for the last 16 of Euro 2020 after a 3-1 win over Turkey in their final Group B game.

The result was not enough for Switzerland to leapfrog Wales into second in Group A but four points should be enough to see the Swiss through as one of the four best third-placed teams.

In the other Group A game, Wales’ 1-0 loss to Italy meant that the Welsh took second place in the group on goal difference.

The result confirmed Turkey’s exit from the competition. They were many people’s dark horses at the start of the tournament but lost all three games.

Haris Seferovic opened the scoring with a lovely low finish from the edge of the penalty area.

Xherdan Shaqiri scored an even better goal to double Switzerland’s lead within the opening half hour. Seferovic was integral to the build-up but he was eventually stopped by the Turkish defence. The ball found Shaqiri though who sent it into the top right corner from 20 yards.

Irfan Kahveci pulled a goal back for Turkey in the second half and it was another stunner. This time, the Fenerbahce midfielder picked out the top corner from long range.

It was Shaqiri who completed the scoring with 22 minutes remaining when he struck first time after a superb low cross by Steven Zuber.
