Sweden hold firm to deny Spain at Euro 2020

Spain were unable to make a winning start to their Euro 2020 campaign after being held to a goalless draw by Sweden.

Despite dominating possession from start to finish, Spain were unable to breach the Swedish defence despite recording 15 shots to Sweden’s four.

Robin Olsen had a superb game in the Sweden goal and stopped Dani Olmo’s close-range header early on.

Koke then had two superb chances but failed to hit the target. First, he sent the ball wide of the right post before firing over a few minutes later.

The best chance of the match fell to Sweden though. Alexander Isak, who was recently named the young player of the year in La Liga, beat Unai Simon but struck Marcos Llorente before rebounding off the post.

Olmo had another chance to give Spain the lead before half time but Olsen was on hand once again to keep the score level.

Sweden’s only chance in the second half came on the hour mark as Marcus Berg came within inches of scoring off Isak’s pass.

Gerard Moreno called Olsen into action once again late on to keep out his header and Pablo Sarabia had another chance deep into stoppage time but Olsen once again made the save.

The result means that Slovakia find themselves at the top of the Group E table after they beat Poland 2-1 earlier.
