Southampton out of relegation zone despite late Everton equaliser

Southampton have moved out of the Premier League relegation zone despite conceding a stoppage-time equaliser in a 1-1 draw against Everton.

The result means that West Bromwich Albion live to fight another day after beating Tottenham in stoppage time earlier in the afternoon.

Nathan Redmond scored the opening goal of the game in the 56th minute as Southampton moved out of the dropzone with two games remaining.

Tom Davies left it late to equalise, firing in from 20 yards deep into stoppage time.

Cenk Tosun was lively at the start of the match and headed narrowly over the bar from the penalty spot in the 14th minute.

Charlie Austin nearly gave Saints the lead shortly after but Jordan Pickford leapt towards the top corner to keep the shot out.

Southampton kept pushing for a goal with Oriol Romeu and Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg both testing Pickford.

Redmond opened the scoring in the second half when he headed low into the net from a corner.

Southampton defended well under pressure to keep crosses from Seamus Coleman and Oumar Niasse at bay, and they needed to see the match out with 10 men after Maya Yoshida picked up a second yellow card.

Leighton Baines had a superb chance to level the score in the 94th minute but his free kick was kept out by Alex McCarthy.

In the 97th minute, Idrissa Gueye found Tom Davies whose deflected shot hit the back of the net.

Everton will finish the season at West Ham United next Sunday, while Southampton still need to face Swansea City and Manchester City.
