Simona Halep wins first Wimbledon title after thrashing Serena Williams

Simona Halep has beaten Serena Williams in straight sets to claim her first Wimbledon title.

Halep was supreme from start to finish to win 6-2 6-2 and deny the American a record-equalling 24th Grand Slam title.

The match started perfectly for the Romanian, who broke Williams in the opening game before holding to love. A second break came and Halep stretched the lead to 4-0.

Williams did finally get on the board with a love game but Halep saved break point to hold before claiming the set at her next service game when Williams sent a return wide.

It was an uphill battle in the second set for Williams too. The set went to serve up until 2-2 with both players recording a love game, but Halep broke after an unforced error, one of 24 over the course of the afternoon, saw Williams send a backhand long.

Another shot sent long put Halep 4-2 up, and she was serving for the match soon after when another down-the-line winner broke Williams once again.

Halep did wrap it up in less than a hour. She stretched out a 40-0 lead before Williams hit the net to complete a stunning display from the world number seven.
