Shanghai Masters: Andy Murray through, Kyle Edmund in sixth straight loss

Andy Murray is through to the second round of the Shanghai Masters after beating Argentina’s Juan Ignacio Londero at the Shanghai Open.

Murray lost the opening set but recovered to win 2-6 6-2 6-3.

The former world number one was broken twice by the world number 56 in the opener but took the opening three games of the second set on the way to levelling.

Murray then took a 3-1 lead in the decider and saved two break points in the final game before sealing the victory.

World number 12 Fabio Fognini will play Murray in the second round.

Elsewhere, Kyle Edmund will lose his spot at the top of British tennis after a sixth straight defeat.

Edmund will drop out of the world’s top-50 after losing 6-4 7-6 to France’s Jeremy Chardy, with Dan Evans or Cameron Norrie set to replace him as British number one.

Norrie advanced to the second round by beating Gilles Simon 7-5 6-2 and faces world number four Daniil Medvedev in the next round.

In the Tianjin Open, Heather Watson advanced to the second round after defeating Ukraine’s Katerina Bondarenko 6-4 7-6.
