Scottish Premiership roundup: Rangers strike late, St Johnstone thrash Motherwell

Steven Gerrard watched his new Rangers side score a late winner to beat Kilmarnock 1-0.

Rangers failed to get a shot on target until the death but came close when Jamie Murphy hit the crossbar, with two Killie chances falling to Jordan Jones.

David Bates struck in the 86th minute to turn in Sean Goss’s cross and secure the points.

Aberdeen have held onto a one-point lead over Rangers with a 0-0 draw against Hibernian.

Jamie Maclaren missed an early penalty for Hibs in a game with few chances for either side.

Sam Cosgrove came closest for the Dons in the second half but his header was blocked by Efe Ambrose.

The Motherwell side seemed to already have their sights set on their summer holidays as they lost 5-1 to St Johnstone.

Saints scored three goals in the space of nine minutes before half time, with Steven MacLean and Steven Anderson scoring before MacLean sealed the deal with his second of the afternoon.

MacLean’s hat-trick was complete in the 56th minute before Gael Bigirimana pulled a goal back.

David McMillan restored the four-goal deficit though with nine minutes to spare.

In the day’s early game, Dundee defeated Hamilton 1-0 thanks to a goal from Kevin Holt.
