It was another tough night for Scottish Premiership sides on matchday two of the Scottish League Cup.

After three Premiership sides were held by lower division opposition on Saturday, St Johnstone and Livingston continued to struggle.

St Johnstone face an uphill task to qualify from Group B after losing 1-0 to League One side Montrose.

Terry Masson curled the ball in for Montrose with 18 minutes remaining on a night where Saints failed to impress.

Livingston have moved to the top of Group G despite struggling to get past lower-division for the second successive match.

They needed an 85th-minute goal from Ricki Lamie after Ayr’s Andrew Murdoch had cancelled out Aymen Souda’s opener.

Hearts continued their march towards the second round with a 2-0 win over Cowdenbeath, early goals from Craig Halkett and Anthony McDonald enough to see off the Fifers, and a Ross Stewart brace helped Ross County towards a 4-0 win over Brechin City.

Greenock Morton started their League Cup campaign in style as five different scorers lead them to a 6-1 win over Dumbarton.

Elsewhere, Dundee United kept pace with Hearts in Group A by beating Stenhousemuir 2-1 and a penalty-shootout win gave Queen of the South a bonus point after a 3-3 draw against Annan Athletic.
