Scotland under-21s defeat France at Toulon Tournament

Scotland under-21s have beaten hosts France 1-0 at the Toulon Tournament.

The Tartan Army drew with Togo in their opening match but Oliver Burke scored the only goal of the game today in the 35th minute to leapfrog their opponents into second in Group B.

Burke spearheaded the Scotland attack in the opening stages, with Hibernian’s Ryan Porteous impressing in defence.

The West Bromwich Albion man combined well with Michael Johnston but a good chance was snuffed out by the French defence.

Burke opened the scoring shortly after though, running on to Fraser Hornby’s knockdown before firing past Dimitry Bertaud.

France pushed for a leveller in the second half, with Celtic’s Anthony Ralston and Porteous snuffing out a number of crosses.

A French penalty appeal was turned down before full time too, with Ludovic Blas going down under the challenge of Johnston.

Robby McCrorie pulled off a wonderful save to keep out Steve Ambri, and the France substitute could have found an equaliser late on but McCrorie was alert at the near post.

Scotland play South Korea on Saturday with a win securing qualification to the semi-final if France beat Togo.
