Stoke City captain Ryan Shawcross has blamed the players for Stoke City’s relegation from the Premier League.

Shawcross was at fault for Patrick van Aanholt’s winning goal with their 2-1 loss ending a decade-long run in the top division.

“It’s difficult. It doesn’t happen over one game, it’s happened over a season. There are a lot of things that need to change, a lot of things that need to be better. But ultimately it’s down to the players, we’ve not been good enough this season,” Shawcross told Sky Sports.

“The fans have been brilliant again today, even after a tough result they are still cheering us on. That shows the dedication they’ve got.

“Since the Gaffer (Paul Lambert) has come in we’ve had a right go, we’ve been in every game – against the top teams and those around us. For whatever reason we haven’t got the goals we needed and that’s ultimately cost us. Palace were strong on the break and they hit us a couple of times. It’s massively disappointing. But this is a good club and it’ll come back.”

West Bromwich Albion could join Stoke in the Championship if they fail to beat Tottenham this afternoon.
