Record-breaking Federer wins eighth Wimbledon

Roger Federer has beaten Marin Cilic 6-3 6-1 6-4 to win the Wimbledon final.

The 35-year-old has broken Pete Sampras’ record to lift his eighth Wimbledon trophy.

The Swiss was at his best from the start and broke twice on his way to the first set.

Cilic slipped midway through the first and needed the trainer on during the break. That affected the Croatian even more.

He capitulated in the second set and lost two love games as Federer strolled into a two-set lead.

Cilic was a bit more competitive in the third set. The 28-year-old held serve until 3-4 but Federer’s dominance was never in doubt.

Twenty-four unforced errors for Cilic were the key as the Croatian failed to cope with the occasion.

For Federer, he is perhaps playing his best tennis ever at the age of 35. The world number 3 played less than 12 hours of tennis on the way to winning the title and never lost a set.
