Real Madrid gifted Champions League final place after Bayern howler

Real Madrid have progressed to the Champions League final after a 2-2 second-leg draw against Bayern Munich.

The Spanish club have won the tie 4-3 on aggregate after a 2-1 victory last week.

Bayern dominated the game, but gifted Real Madrid a vital second goal when goalkeeper Sven Ulreich failed to control a backpass before Karim Benzema finished into an open goal.

It took just three minutes for Joshua Kimmich to give Bayern the lead on the night when he beat Keylor Navas from six yards.

Benzema hit back with his first goal of the night eight minutes later though. Marcelo’s cross found the striker unmarked at the back post to head in.

Robert Lewandowski felt he should have had a penalty soon after when he fell under the challenge of Sergio Ramos but the referee waved play on.

The Polish striker came close again in the 34th minute but his shot was saved by Navas before James Rodriguez, on loan from Real, fired over from six yards.

Ulreich’s horror moment came just after the restart. The goalkeeper allowed a Corentin Tolisso backpass to go straight past him for Benzema to tap the ball into an empty net.

Cristiano Ronaldo should have put the tie beyond doubt 10 minutes later. First, his outstretched leg missed Marco Asensio’s cross by inches, and seconds later he volleyed over from close range.

Rodriguez scored Bayern’s second with 27 minutes remaining. His first shot was blocked before he slammed the rebound through the legs of Navas.

Bayern needed another goal to win the tie on away goals, but Tolisso saw a shot saved by Navas before Rodriguez struck wide.

The German side piled the pressure on Real, but Navas held firm to keep a Thomas Muller header out.

Lewandowski came close to a winner in stoppage time but, again, Navas dived at his feet to secure Real’s passage into the final.

Real will play either Liverpool or Roma in the final, who meet in Rome on Wednesday.
