Pro14: Ulster thrash new boys Cheetahs, Edinburgh and Munster win
Ulster have beaten Pro14 newcomers the Cheetahs 42-19 in the opening game of the season.
Clayton Blommetjies put the South African side ahead before Tommy Bowe scored to give Ulster the lead after John Cooney’s penalty.
Makazole Mapimpi gave Cheetahs a 14-8 lead but tries from Alan O’Connor, Stuart McCloskey and Charles Piutau put Ulster in control at half time.
Louis Ludik and Peter Nelson crossed in the second half, with Sergeal Petersen replying for the Cheetahs.
Richard Cockerill won his first match as Edinburgh head coach as they beat Cardiff Blues 20-10.
Blair Kinghorn crossed in the 12th minute and Duncan Weir added a penalty to give Edinburgh a 10-point lead.
Josh Navidi replied for the hosts and a Jarrod Evans penalty levelled the score at the start of the second half.
Weir added three more for Edinburgh and Chris Dean scored a 57th-minute try to secure the victory.
In the night’s third match, Munster thrashed Benetton Treviso 34-3.
Jean Kleyn crossed twice and Tyler Bleyendall, Darren Sweetnam and Andrew Conway scored to give Munster a 27-3 half-time lead. Marty Banks’ 20th-minute penalty was Treviso’s only success.
Kleyn completed his hat-trick in the second half to score the game’s final try.
