Adam Armstrong’s third-minute strike gave Southampton three Premier League points as Aston Villa’s losing streak continued.

The result has consigned Villa to five defeats in a row and they sit just three points above the relegation zone ahead of the rest of the weekend’s matches.

Southampton dominated the first half and could have been further ahead after Adam Armstrong’s early strike.

Stuart Armstrong fired over the bar and James Ward-Prowse’s shot was well saved by Emiliano Martinez.

Villa improved massively in the second half though with Anwar El Ghazi and Emiliano Buendia going close.

Tyrone Mings felt he should have won a penalty after Oriol Romeu appeared to tug his shirt, but nothing was given.

The result sees Southampton move up to 12th in the Premier League table. Aston Villa stay in 15th.
