Premier League Roundup: Huddersfield Town secure safety, Manchester City break goals record

Huddersfield Town have secured Premier League safety after a 1-1 draw at Chelsea.

The result puts Huddersfield four points above 18th-placed Swansea City, who need a nine-goal swing to usurp Southampton on the final day.

Marcos Alonso had a chance well saved early on before Antonio Rudiger missed the target from close range.

Alvaro Morata should have finished before half-time when he went round Huddersfield keeper Jonas Lossl but he failed to finish from a tight angle.

Shocking goalkeeping led to Huddersfield’s opener in the 48th minute. Willy Caballero, in the line-up due to Thibaut Courtois’ back injury, came running out to a long ball but Laurent Depoitre beat him to it and looped the ball in from 20 yards.

Chelsea were level with 29 minutes remaining when Cesar Azpilicueta’s cross was cleared onto the head of Alonso to unwittingly deflect the ball in.

Lossl pulled off a miracle save to keep Huddersfield in it when he tipped a header onto the post after a scramble in the area and Huddersfield held on to secure the point they needed.

Arsenal are still yet to gain an away point in 2018 after losing 3-1 to Leicester City.

Leicester took the lead in the 14th minute when Kelechi Iheanacho struck through a crowded penalty area to finish.

It went from bad to worse for the Gunners when Iheanacho stole the ball off Konstantinos Mavropanos straight from kick-off. The youngster pulled the Leicester forward down and earned a red card as the last man.

Leicester’s first-half dominance continued, with Harry Maguire and Jamie Vardy both being denied by Petr Cech.

Arsenal fought back to level in the 53rd minute. After good work down the right wing from Ainsley Maitland-Niles, Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang had a shot saved before powering the rebound into the roof of the net.

Leicester retook the lead 23 minutes later when Demarai Gray won a penalty. From the spot, Vardy powered the ball into the top corner. Riyad Mahrez weaved through the Arsenal defence in the final minute to add Leicester’s third.

Manchester City continued their Premier League dominance with a 3-1 win over Brighton.

City scored their 103rd goal of the season, and moved level with the Premier League record, in the 16th minute when Leroy Sane broke through the Brighton defence to supply Danilo who finished low into the net.

Despite City’s dominance, Brighton drew level four minutes later. Backup goalkeeper Claudio Bravo came racing out of his box to challenge Davy Propper but the Dutchman went round him with ease before crossing to Leonardo Ulloa to head into an empty net.

Usual order was restored before halftime though. Sane provided the assist for Bernardo Silva to score the record-breaking goal.

Sane was provider again for City’s third, playing in Fernandinho to score with a first-time shot in the 72nd minute.

Tottenham secured Champions League football with a game to spare by beating Newcastle United 1-0.

Harry Kane scored the winner in the 50th minute when his shot found the top corner after Heung-min Son’s pass.

After this evening’s result, Chelsea now have to beat Newcastle and hope that Liverpool lose to Brighton in order to qualify for next season’s Champions League.
