New Zealand were taken all the way by Argentina in their opening game of the Rugby Championship.

The All Blacks eventually prevailed 20-16 despite Argentina being the best team for the majority of the second half.

Los Pumas took a six-point lead in the opening six minutes after penalties from Nicolas Sanchez and Emiliano Boffelli.

A converted Ngani Laumape try gave New Zealand the lead before Sanchez added three more points as Argentina edged out in front.

Beaudin Barrett was perfect with the boot and scored two penalties and Brodie Retallick went over to give New Zealand a 20-9 lead at half time.

Boffelli scored a try shortly after the restart and Argentina continued to push for the win in the second half, but the All Blacks held firm to claim the win.

Earlier in the day, South Africa impressed in their 35-17 win over Australia.
