Netherlands through after beating Austria

The Netherlands have qualified for the Euro 2020 last 16 after a 2-0 win over Austria.

Memphis Depay scored early on from the penalty spot before Denzel Dumfries netted his second of the tournament as the Dutch claimed top spot in Group C with a game to spare.

The result has also confirmed North Macedonia’s exit from the competition after their loss to Ukraine earlier.

Dumfries, who has been one of the tournament’s revelations so far, won the Netherlands an early penalty when he was brought down and Depay despatched the opening goal into the left of the net.

Depay could have had a second shortly after but his shot went wide right, before the former Manchester United man sent a shot narrowly over.

Dumfries added to his goal against Ukraine with a simple finish from seven yards after good work from Donyell Malen.

Austria struggled to threaten the Dutch defence but new Real Madrid signing David Alaba pushed the ball just wide of the right post late on.
