Moeen Ali 67 strengthens England after day three

Moeen Ali’s 67 not out has taken England to 226/8 after the third day’s play of the fourth test against South Africa.

South Africa were bowled out for 226 in the first hour of the day, following a difficult second day’s play for the Proteas.

England’s innings started poorly though, with Joe Root (49) the only one of the top six batsmen to score more than 20.

Alistair Cook went for 10 before Tom Westley (9) and Dawid Malan (6) both only managed single figures.

When Jonny Bairstow was caught by Kagiso Rabada for 10 England sat on a lowly 153/7.

Moeen came on to boost England’s innings with 67 runs off 59 balls before the Manchester rain started to fall to stop play early.

South Africa will start day four 360 runs behind.
