Mats Hummels own goal gives France win over Germany

France have taken a huge step towards qualifying for the Euro 2020 knockout rounds by beating Germany in Munich.

The result puts France second in Group F after Portugal defeated Hungary 3-0 earlier in the day.

Mats Hummels turned the ball into his own net from a Lucas Hernandez cross midway through the second half and Germany were unable to find a breakthrough at the other end.

Kylian Mbappe and Karim Benzema both put the ball in the back of the net in the second half but both goals were disallowed for offside.

France started as the brighter team and Manuel Neuer was called into action early to stop an Mbappe strike.

The goal came in the 20th minute after a superb pass from Paul Pogba found Hernandez. The Bayern Munich full back played the ball across the box and Hummels was only able to deflect it into his own goal.

Ilkay Gundogan and Kai Havertz both had chances to level the score before halftime but failed to hit the target.

France were the better team in the second half and came within inches of doubling their lead when Adrien Rabiot hit the post.

Mbappe then showed some superb skill to cut in from the left before finding the bottom right corner but the goal was ruled out by VAR for offside.

VAR was called into action once again late as France kept pushing for a second. Mbappe breached the German defence down the right from a through ball before playing in Benzema to score from six yards but the Paris Saint-Germain forward was offside in the build-up.

France travel to Hungary for their next match while Germany play host to Portugal.
