Marcos Alonso scores twice as Chelsea beat Tottenham Hotspur

Tottenham Hotspur have lost 2-1 against Chelsea in their first Premier League home game at Wembley.

Marcos Alonso gave Chelsea the lead with a curling free-kick in the 24th minute before Michy Batshuayi’s late own goal levelled the score.

Alonso popped up again two minutes from time to secure the win for the Blues.

Alvaro Morata should have put Chelsea ahead in the sixth minute. Cesar Azpilicueta’s cross was delivered beautifully onto the head of the striker but he could only direct the ball wide from seven yards.

Harry Kane came close to opening the scoring five minutes later. His drilled shot went through the legs of Thibaut Courtois but the ball went wide.

The next chance fell to Dele Alli after Andreas Christensen failed to clear a cross, but Alli could only fire the ball over.

Alonso gave Chelsea the lead in the 24th minute with an excellent free-kick. David Luiz was fouled by Alli on the edge of the penalty area and Alonso stepped up to curl the ball into the top right corner.

Kane hit the post on the verge of half time after brilliant work from Alli set him up. His low shot beat Courtois but the ball was cleared after rebounding off the post.

The striker had another chance from a corner after the restart but Luiz got in the way of the shot. He then tried to find space in the area with Tottenham’s next attack but Azpilicueta was on hand to clear the ball away.

Chelsea struggled to threaten in the second half but Willian caused problems on the left wing when they counterattacked. His through ball found Morata inside the area but the shot was deflected behind.

Willian almost put the game beyond doubt with 15 minutes remaining. He let a shot go from long range, Hugo Lloris was well beaten but the ball bounced back off the post.

Spurs finally equalised with nine minutes remaining. Tiemoue Bakayoko fouled Alli on the left and Christian Eriksen’s ball in was headed into his own net by Batshuayi.

Alonso struck again with just two minutes remaining, collecting Pedro’s through ball before powering the ball in to the near post.

The result means that both sides have three points from their opening two Premier League matches.
