Liverpool hold off Manchester City to claim victory

Liverpool have beaten Premier League leaders Manchester City 4-2 at Anfield.

The teams went in level at halftime after goals from Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain and Leroy Sane but goals from Roberto Firmino, Sadio Mane and Mohamed Salah gave Liverpool an unassailable lead.

Bernardo Silva and Ilkay Gundogan scored for City late on but they were unable to complete a late comeback.

Oxlade-Chamberlain gave Liverpool the lead in style in the ninth minute, firing a low shot into the bottom left corner from 25 yards.

Kevin de Bruyne nearly set up Sergio Aguero shortly after but the Argentinian striker was not able to get on the end of the through ball.

Firmino could have doubled the lead on the half-hour mark but headed wide of the post, before De Bruyne stung the hands of Loris Karius from 20 yards.

Sane levelled the score five minutes before the break, cutting in from the left before beating Karius at the near post from 10 yards.

City should have taken the lead shortly after the restart when Nicolas Otamendi rose highest at a corner but his header crashed off the crossbar.

At the other end, Oxlade-Chamberlain nearly scored his second but Ederson parried his shot behind.

Liverpool then blitzed Manchester City with three goals in nine minutes to secure the victory.

Oxlade-Chamberlain was central to the Liverpool attack once again when he found Firmino inside the area who coolly chipped the ball over Ederson.

Then, Salah played in Mane to power the ball into the top left corner from 14 yards.

Salah got onto the scoresheet himself in the 68th minute. A through ball was overhit and Ederson muffed a clearance into the path of the Egyptian who found the target from 40 yards.

Bernardo Silva pulled a goal back with six minutes to spare when he thumped a rebound into the bottom left corner from 10 yards.

The ball then fell to Gundogan in stoppage time to thump past Karius and set up a grandstand finish.

Liverpool were able to cling on in the final two minutes of stoppage time though to claim the three points.

The win moves Liverpool above Chelsea up to third in the Premier League table. Manchester City remain with a 15-point lead at the top of the table.
