An injury to Kyle Edmund during his Brisbane International quarter-final defeat to world number three Grigor Dimitrov has cast doubt on his participation at the Australian Open.

Edmund went down on his right ankle at 4-4 in the final set but was able to play out the remainder of the match in a 3-6 6-7 4-6 loss.

Injuries have been a familiar sight for Britain’s tennis players in the Australian Open build-up, with Andy Murray’s withdrawal leaving Edmund as Britain’s highest-ranked male player in the draw.

Johanna Konta also retired from the Brisbane International after a hip injury yesterday.

Edmund had matched Dimitrov before the injury though with one break separating the pair in the opener.

Both players held serve in the second, with Edmund saving two break points at 4-4. The Brit pulled away though to take the tie-break 7-3.

Again, Edmund saved two break-points early in the deciding set and an impressive love game to make it 4-4 gave the 22-year-old a chance to claim victory.

He was wrongfooted in the next game though, and screamed while going down on his right ankle. Dimitrov immediately sprinted over the net to help his opponent get to his seat.

Edmund did get up to finish the match but was broken in the final game for Dimitrov to progress to the semi-final.
