Kyle Edmund out of Madrid Open after defeat to Denis Shapovalov

Kyle Edmund has exited the Madrid Open at the quarter-final stage after a 5-7 7-6 4-6 defeat to Canada’s Denis Shapovalov.

The British number one had beaten Daniil Medvedev, Novak Djokovic and David Goffin en route to the last eight but fell to the 19-year-old in two hours and 30 minutes.

Both players broke early in the opener on the way to 2-2 and, after the rest of the set going to serve, the Canadian broke to force a tie-break to take the first set.

The whole of the second set went to serve. Shapovalov needed to save two break points at 4-4 before Edmund himself saved match point at 5-6 to force a tie-break.

Edmund let a two-point lead slip twice in the tie-break but eventually won out 8-6.

The world number 22 was undone in the third set though. Shapovalov broke for 2-1 and held serve throughout before seeing out the final game to love.

Shapovalov will play John Isner or Alexander Zverev in the semi-final.
