Kyle Edmund has been beaten in the third round of the Italian Open by world number three Alexander Zverev.

The British number one ran his opponent close in both sets but eventually went down 7-5 7-6.

Edmund was broken in the opening game of the match but broke back to make it 5-5. Zverev regained the lead though and held serve to take the first set.

The second set went right to the wire with both players breaking just once.

Edmund saved seven match points in the tie-break, including three in a row at 6-3, but eventually went down 13-11.

Zverev will play world number 10 David Goffin in the next round, who lost to Edmund at the Madrid Open last week.
