Great Britain number two Kyle Edmund has beaten Canadian Denis Shapovalov 6-7(5-7) 7-6 (7-4) 6-4 to reach in the first round of the Brisbane International.

Edmund saved two set points in the first-set tiebreak before going behind to the 18-year-old but came back to win in two hours and 35 minutes.

The Brit broke early in the final set and held serve to claim victory, despite Shapovalov’s 18 aces.

Shapovalov defeated Edmund at Queen’s Club and the US Open last year, but lost in February’s Davis Cup tie after being disqualified for thumping a ball into umpire Arnaud Gabas’s eye.

Edmund will play South Korea’s Hyeon Chung in the last 16.
