John McGinn leads Scotland to first World Cup qualifying win

Scotland have defeated the Faroe Islands to claim their first win in World Cup Qualifying.

A John McGinn double and goals from Che Adams and Ryan Fraser sealed a 4-0 win to move Scotland into second in Group F.

McGinn fired in from 12 yards to give Scotland the lead in the seventh minute but the Faroe Islands nearly hit back when Brandur Hendriksson’s 30-yarder was tipped over by Craig Gordon.

Scotland dominated from then on though, and McGinn doubled the lead when he headed in from Kieran Tierney’s cross after the break.

Adams netted his first Scotland goal in style on the hour mark when he turned the defender before striking into the bottom corner from 25 yards.

Fraser made it four shortly after when Andrew Robertson lifted a cross into his path to head in from five yards.

“It was a good performance. I expected it, to be honest, we are improving as a team. If we weren’t at it tonight, it would have been a tough night, the Faroes are good, organised, disciplined,” Scotland manager Steve Clarke told Sky Sports.

“It’s not a great week but it is a good week, we are in the group, second place, five points, and obviously have a tough week in September away to Austria and Denmark either side of Moldova at home. It will be a pivotal week but one we can look forward to.”

Scotland’s next competitive match will be their opening group game of Euro 2020, when they meet Czech Republic on June 14.
