British number one Johanna Konta has beaten British number two Heather Watson in straight sets at the Nottingham Open.

Konta was challenged all the way by her counterpart but eventually prevailed 6-4 7-6.

The world number 22 broke her opponent in the fifth game of the opening set before saving two break points on her way to the lead.

Watson hit back, though, and went into a 4-1 lead before Konta broke to level the set.

Konta twice led by two points but Watson levelled at 4-4. Watson then saved a match point at 6-4 but Konta finished the match at the second attempt.

The 26-year old will play Dalila Jakupovic in the quarter-final.

Earlier in the day, Britain’s Katy Boulter secured her place in the quarter-final by beating former US Open champion Sam Stosur 7-6 (8-6) 6-1.
