Two late wickets have cost England dear on the opening day of the final Ashes test.

Joe Root and Jonny Bairstow both fell in the final two overs of the day as England finished with 233-5 at the close of play.

Root had put together a 133-run partnership with Dawid Malan to put England in the hunt for their first win of the series before the captain edged a Mitchell Starc ball to Mitchell Marsh at square leg.

Bairstow came in but only faced seven balls before edging Josh Hazlewood into the hands of wicketkeeper Tim Paine.

England had earlier slipped to 95-3 after the wickets of Mark Stoneman (24), James Vince (25) and Alistair Cook (39).

The Root-Malan partnership looked to put England in control going into the second day, but the captain’s exit and Bairstow’s dismissal has tipped the balance in Australia’s favour.

Malan remains at bat on 55 not out, with Moeen Ali yet to face a ball.
