Joe Root, Alistair Cook hit centuries on good day for England

Joe Root and Alistair Cook’s formidable partnership led England to a profitable opening day in the first day-night Test against West Indies.

Debutant Mark Stoneman opened with Cook but was bowled for just eight by Kemar Roach.

Tom Westley then went for the same score for an lbw off Miguel Cummins’ bowling.

The floodlights came on as play continued into the evening for the first time ever in an international Test match. Root’s innings finally came to an end an hour short of the close of play. Roach’s bowling finally found a gap to take out the England captain for 136.

Dawid Malan came in to see out the day’s play. His innings was nearly cut short for just 2 when he was dropped by Shane Dowrich.

Cook stretched his innings past 150 two overs from the end to finish the day on 153 not out, while Malan added 28.
