Cambridge United have appointed Joe Dunne as their new head coach.

Dunne joined Cambridge in 2015 as assistant manager and took charge as caretaker manager when Shaun Derry left the club in February.

The former Colchester United boss led Cambridge to just four defeats in 14 matches and has signed a three-year contract with the League Two club.

“Having developed as a coach across the course of my three years with Cambridge United, I am thankful to the Majority Shareholder Paul Barry and the Cambridge United Board of Directors for providing me with this opportunity on a permanent basis. I would also like to thank the LMA for their support, throughout the process,” Dunne told the club’s official website.

“As I have mentioned in recent weeks, I have never enjoyed coaching a group as much as I have this one during the last two months. I now look forward to continuing to work alongside our talented team of staff here, in developing the exciting potential of individuals from both within our first team and beyond from the Club’s youth set-up.

“I would also like to thank the supporters who have backed the team with such passion both at the Abbey and on the road right through this season, particularly in the past two months. Your commitment to give up your weekends entirely at times in support of the team, means a great deal and I look forward to moving into next season together.”

Cambridge United currently sit 13th in the League Two table and host Port Vale in the final game of the season on Saturday.
