A late Don Cowie goal has led Heart of Midlothian to a 1-0 victory over Hibernian.

After a nervy 86 minutes, Cowie turned the ball into the bottom left corner, despite Lewis Stevenson’s efforts to clear the ball off the line.

Steven Naismith, making his debut for Hearts, could have opened the deadlock inside the opening three minutes but slid the ball wide of the target before Martin Boyle went close at the other end.

Hearts saw a penalty appeal turned down before halftime when Darren McGregor appeared to use his hand. Demetri Mitchell was denied by Hibs goalkeeper Ofir Marciano.

Cowie finally made the breakthrough with four minutes to spare, flicking on Christophe Berra’s header. Stevenson initially blocked the ball off the line, but it spun back to creep into the bottom left corner.
