Harry Kane, Dele Alli lead Tottenham to victory over Watford

Tottenham took one step closer to securing Champions League football next season with a 2-0 victory over Watford.

Dele Alli opened the scoring before Harry Kane netted his 27th league goal of the season to give Tottenham the three points.

Alli was gifted Tottenham’s opener in the 16th minute when goalkeeper Orestis Karneziz fumbled a Kieran Trippier cross before Christian Eriksen poked the ball back to Alli for the easy finish.

Andre Gray nearly levelled 10 minutes late but his first-time shot was saved by Hugo Lloris after being put through by Etienne Capoue.

Watford had another chance to level on the verge of half time. This time, Richarlison’s shot was saved.

Kane added a second goal just after the restart when he finished from 10 yards after Trippier’s pass.

A third should have come with 20 minutes remaining. Trippier’s cross met the head of Jan Vertonghen but the ball crashed off the post.

Gerard Deulofeu had the ball in the net for Watford soon after, after going round Lloris but the assistant’s flag was up and the forward was flagged offside.

A second disallowed goal of the evening came at the other end just a minute later. Kane’s shot found the far corner but, again, referee Michael Oliver whistled for offside.

The result sees Tottenham build up a five-point cushion on fifth-placed Chelsea. Watford have now failed to win in seven matches and lie 13th in the Premier League table, six points above the relegation zone.
