Hallam Hope double sends Carlisle United into third round

Carlisle United have beaten Gillingham 3-1 to progress to the third round of the FA Cup.

The League Two side will now host Championship Sheffield Wednesday on January 6 after Hallam Hope scored twice in the first half.

Hope opened the scoring in the seventh minute when his shot was deflected into the net and then doubled the lead before half-time from Richie Bennett’s cross.

Scott Wagstaff pulled a goal back for the League One club in the second half before Shaun Miller added a third Carlisle goal in stoppage time.

Hope nearly completed his hat-trick 10 minutes from time, but his shot clattered off the post.

Carlisle goalkeeper Jack Bonham kept out a flurry of chances in the closing stages as Carlisle defeated higher-division opposition for the second time this season.
