Steven Gerrard has confirmed that former Liverpool midfielder Gary McAllister will join Rangers as assistant manager.

The new Rangers manager said that McAllister “ticks the boxes” and has the experience to help him in his first managerial job.

McAllister and Gerrard were Liverpool teammates between 2000 and 2002 and the Scotsman was first-team coach at Liverpool in 2015.

The 53-year-old has also previously been manager of Coventry City and Leeds United and took caretaker charge of Aston Villa in 2011.

Gerrard and McAllister will officially take up their roles on June 1.
