World number one Simona Halep came from behind to defeat world number 83 Alison Riske in the French Open first round.

Riske was in fine form in the opening set, winning the first five games to take it 6-2.

Halep turned it round straight away though, herself winning five games on the bounce on the way to a 6-1 second-set win.

The Romanian continued her superiority in the decider, too, breaking in the second and sixth games to come through 6-1.

Caroline Wozniacki came through unscathed in her second-round match against Georgina Garcia-Perez.

It took just 54 minutes for Wozniacki to complete the win 6-1 6-0, losing just one game and conceding just 25 points all afternoon.

American Sloane Stephens also avoided an upset with a 6-2 6-2 win over Magdalena Frech.

Stephens broke early in the opener and held serve throughout to take the lead, before winning two out of three break points in the second set on the way to a comprehensive victory.

Elsewhere, Elina Svitolina came through against Viktoria Kuzmova 6-3 6-4 and Petra Kvitova defeated Lara Arruabarrena-Vecino 6-0 6-4.
