France survive Hungary shock at Euro 2020

Hungary have got off the mark at Euro 2020 after a 1-1 draw against France.

Antoine Griezmann needed to come to the rescue for France in the final 30 minutes after Attila Fiola had given Hungary a shock lead at half time.

The draw puts France one point ahead of Portugal in Group F with Portugal meeting Germany this evening.

Regardless of the result later, Hungary will probably still need to beat Germany on Wednesday to have a chance of progressing.

France were dominant in possession and could have scored a number of goals in the first half. Karim Benzema was first to test Peter Gulacsi before Griezmann saw his shot stopped by the RB Leipzig goalkeeper.

Next up was Kylian Mbappe but his header went just wide of the right post. The Paris Saint-Germain forward then played in Benzema but he also failed to hit the target.

Hungary scored the opener entirely against the run of play in first-half stoppage time. Roland Sallai played in Fiola who drove into the penalty area before finishing low past Hugo Lloris.

France pushed for an equaliser in the second half and Ousmane Dembele struck the outside of the right post on the hour mark.

The goal did finally come though when a long ball from Lloris was not dealt with by the Hungary defence. Mbappe played the ball across the six-yard box and Griezmann powered the ball in after a deflection off a defender.

Mbappe should have led France to the win late on. First, he shot just wide to the right before forcing Gulacsi in to another superb save.

Raphael Varane joined the France attack deep into stoppage time but his header went wide.
