FIFA propose new eight-team mini World Cup tournament
FIFA president Gianni Infantino has proposed a new eight-team international tournament to replace the Confederations Cup.
The tournament, dubbed the ‘Final 8’, would be the culmination of a global Nations League-style tournament and looks set to take place in October or November every two years, starting from 2021.
Currently, the Confederations Cup acts as a precursor to the World Cup and includes six continental champions, the World Cup host and the World Cup holders.
UEFA and the North American association CONCACAF have already established Nations League tournaments, with the UEFA Nations League starting in September.
Other continental associations would need to set up similar competitions ahead of the Final 8.
