England have beaten Australia by three wickets in the first one-day international at The Oval.

Australia set a target of 215 but England slipped to 38-3 before Eoin Morgan (69) and Joe Root (50) put up a partnership of 115.

Three wickets then fell in the space of three overs to take the score to 163-6 before David Willey hit an unbeaten 35 to win the game with six overs remaining.

Moeen Ali (3-43) and Liam Plunkett (3-42) had led England’s bowling earlier in the day and Australia slipped to 90-5 midway through the innings.

Glenn Maxwell (62) and Ashton Agar (42) dragged Australia towards a more respectable scoreline, though, before Australia lost four wickets in five overs to finish on 214 all out.

The teams meet for the second ODI of the five-match series in Cardiff on Saturday.
