Captain Eoin Morgan has said that England’s World Cup win “means the world” and paid tribute to New Zealand after England needed a Super Over to win the Cricket World Cup.

With the teams level on 241 runs after 50 overs, both teams scored 15 in the Super Over but England lifted the Cricket World Cup due to scoring more boundaries during their innings.

“There wasn’t a lot in that game. I’d like to commiserate Kane [Williamson]. The way they play their cricket, the spirit, the fight that they show is worth aspiring to. The example they set is commendable,” Morgan told Sky Sports.

“I thought today was a hard, hard fought game on a wicket where everybody found it difficult to score. We managed to restrict them to a good score and then we lost wickets and were up against it. [Jos] Buttler and [Ben] Stokes put together a partnership that I really did think would take us quite deep but the game unveiled itself a bit more.

“This has been a four-year journey, we’ve developed a lot over the course of those four years, particularly in the last two. We find it hard to play on wickets like that, like good teams do around the world but today it was about getting over the line. Sport is tough at times but to get over the line today means the world to us.”

The win gives England their first Cricket World Cup win after losing the final in 1992.
