England under-21s have played out a goalless draw against Group A rivals Mexico in the second match of the Toulon Tournament.

Tammy Abraham had led England to three points against China earlier in the week, but neither side were able to take an advantage into the final group game on Friday.

Arsenal’s Eddie Nketiah had a good chance to give England an early lead but struck straight into the arms of Jose Hernandez before Uriel Antuna fired wide at the other end.

Mexico came closest in the first half when Roberto Alvarado forced Freddie Woodman to tip a shot over the bar after a superb pass from Antuna.

Lukas Nmecha could have given England the lead after the restart but his header was saved and Abraham, who came off the bench, came close to scoring from close range but could not quite reach Nmecha’s cross.

Diego Lainez could have won it for Mexico 10 minutes from time but his shot went just over the crossbar.

The result means that the teams remain in the top two in Group A, with four points each, after China and Qatar drew 1-1 earlier in the day.
