England slumped to a 66-run loss in the first One Day International in India, despite being in a good position to win.

Jonny Bairstow’s 94 from 66 balls put England on course to chase down India’s 318 total but four wickets in five overs saw their score slip to 251 all out after just 42.1 overs.

Shikhir Dhawan’s 98 and Virat Kohli’s 56 had led India to a score of 187-3 before Krunal Pandya took just 26 balls to become the fastest debutant to hit a half-century in one-day internationals.

England’s innings started poorly with Ben Stokes falling victim to Prasidh Krishna for 1.

Bairstow’s 94 put England in control though but an inexperienced lower order lost five wickets for 41 runs before eventually losing all their wickets for 251.

The second ODI of the three-game series takes place on Friday.
