England extend lead over South Africa on day three

England will take a 252-run lead into day four of the third test against South Africa after a rain-delayed third day.

Toby Roland-Jones became the first pace bowler to take five wickets in an innings on their England debut since Graham Onions in 2009.

The 29-year-old took four wickets yesterday and wrapped up South Africa’s innings by taking Temba Bavuma’s wicket this morning.

James Anderson had previously taken Morne Morkel’s wicket as South Africa finished on 178.

Alistair Cook was bowled out by Morkel for just seven, but Keaton Jennings (34 not out) and Tom Westley (28 not out) led England to a score of 74/1 before rain stopped play at 245pm.

South Africa had their chances to take Jennings’ wicket. First Dean Elgar dropped the ball at third slip before an lbw decision was overturned on review.

Forecasts are predicting better weather on Sunday and Monday. Captain Joe Root has a key decision to make tomorrow to make sure England declare at the right time.
