England beat Australia by 38 runs in second ODI

England have taken control of their five-match ODI series by beating Australia by 38 runs in Cardiff.

On a day that Australia had already seen their football team lose to France at the World Cup and their rugby team fall to Ireland, it was left to the cricket team to bring some much-needed success to the country, but their day started poorly by conceding 342 runs.

Jason Roy stayed in for the first 35.5 overs and racked up 120 before being caught by Aussie captain Tim Paine. By that point, Jonny Bairstow (42), Alex Hales (26) and Joe Root (22) had helped England towards a score 239-4.

Jhye Richardson and Kane Richardson helped to slow England towards the end of the innings with four wickets in the final eight overs.

Australia struggled to keep up with England’s run-rate and England’s bowling attack started well to take out Travis Head for 19 after 3.2 overs.

Shaun Marsh came in to thump 131 runs off 116 balls but when he fell Australia still needed 50 off 18 balls.

Andrew Tye and Jhye Richardson were both caught out towards the end of the innings, which ended with 17 balls left to play.
