Elia Viviani won his first Tour de France stage after a bunch sprint finish in Nancy.

The Deceuninck-Quick Step rider beat Alexander Kristoff and Caleb Ewan at the last, with teammate Julian Alaphilippe retaining the yellow jersey.

Defending champion Geraint Thomas remains 45 seconds off the lead, five seconds behind Ineos teammate Egan Bernal.

Alaphilippe and Max Richeze led the Italian along the 213km flat route before giving way for Viviani to sprint to the line.

“I can’t believe it. It was the big goal of the year,” Viviani told reporters.

“We missed our first chance to win a stage and take the yellow jersey but after yesterday with Julian it was the moment the team switched on.

“I just needed to do my job in the last few hundred metres. It is what I do better if they launch me like that. I was focused on my lead out, it was perfect team work.”

The Tour continues with a 175km hill stage tomorrow.
