EFL Cup: Newcastle United, Southampton in Cup shocks

Newcastle United and Southampton have been knocked out of the EFL Cup after defeats by Nottingham Forest and Wolverhampton Wanderers.

Forest won a 3-2 thriller against Newcastle after an extra-time goal by Tyler Walker.

Earlier, Aleksandar Mitrovic opened the scoring in the third minute before two quickfire Jason Cummings goals gave Forest the lead. Rolando Aarons levelled in first-half stoppage time but Forest held firm in the second half to keep nine Newcastle shots out.

Wolverhampton Wanderers match against Southampton looked to be going to extra time before Danny Batth opened the scoring in the 67th minute.

Donovan Wilson added Wolves’ second in the 87th minute, just two minutes after coming off the bench.

Huddersfield Town needed to come from behind to beat League One side Rotherham United 2-1.

Semi Ajayi gave Rotherham the lead in the opening minute but a Philip Billing penalty levelled it before Joe Lolley scored the winner.

In the Lancashire derby, Premier League Burnley came through unscathed against League One Blackburn Rovers.

Jack Cork and Robbie Brady scored in the first half to secure a 2-0 win for the Clarets.

Elsewhere, West Ham United defeated Cheltenham Town 2-0 thanks to goals from Diafre Sakho and Andre Ayew.

Stoke City eased past Rochdale 4-0 after goals from Peter Crouch, Ramadan Sobhi and a Joe Allen brace.
